Earlier this week, Phil Vandervort, host of The Morning Ride, took time to honor a little-known hero of World War II ahead of this year’s D-Day commemoration. Waverly B. Woodson Jr. was a heroic African American medic who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On D-Day, despite being wounded, he treated over 200 soldiers under heavy fire on Omaha Beach. Though initially overlooked due to racial discrimination, he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 2024.
