Thursday evening on Jan. 8th when I drove west on hwy 112, there was just a crack running across the road. That was at approximately 4:30 pm. When a county road worker went through just 30 minutes later, he discovered that the road had sunk and broke apart.
The next day-Friday, January 9th, I went out to take some pictures of the damage. It was at this time that I met the man who had come through the night before shortly after I did and discovered the scene in the pictures i have submitted. Hwy 112 is a major artery in the northwest part of the county between Port Angeles and Seiku. DOT does not know at this time when repairs can or will begin. For now, this highway will remain closed, impacting the lives of many people who commute to Clallam Bay, logging trucks, emergency services transport and operations in that area, as well as those people who live out there.
It appears the ground underneath that aprticular part of the highway is so saturated by the melting snow and heavy rains, it is no longer able to support the weight of the pavement. I will submit more updates as they qccur.
