When the Woodland Park Zoo is too far away and/or too expensive there is a great alternative in the north end during the month of October. Fairbank Animal Farm is the answer. Entrance is $2.50 and you get to pet all sorts of baby animals; perfect size for you little ones. At the end of the path, there is a pumpkin patch that you can pick from.
